Role of Dementia Protein Responsible for Normal Memory Revealed

A type of dementia protein called tau protein is responsible for normal learning process in the brain has been revealed.

It has been found to be a critical element responsible for the formation of Alzheimer’s disease. The above finding has given a new hope for future drug remedies.

The above study was published in The EMBO Journal. The researchers have revealed new information into the tau protein which will probably help various molecular processes of the formation of memory.

What is Alzheimers Disease?

It’s a neurodegenerative condition tat affects memory that also impairs the ability to think. And so, it makes the person increasingly dependent on others.

The neurotransmitter named tau and glutamate previously implicated in seizures during conditions like stroke and epilepsy.

Now, the researchers have found that tau has a tendency to bind with protein containing vesicles along with cell receptors for neurotransmitters. Both of them are responsible for memory and learning.

Dementia Protein Role

This is what Dr Arne Ittner, Senior Research Fellow in Neuroscience has to say, “Our new study took a snapshot of all partners tau engages with to support normal brain function,” he said.

He added, “By removing and reintroducing the tau protein in brain cells, we were able to attribute changes in the receptors’ behavior to changes in tau, which may become focal points for future drug therapies,” he said.

As you can see, the new findings clearly provide a molecular link between the normal functioning of tau protein and conditions of heightened brain activity.
