Female Infertility Can Be Predicted Using Artificial Intelligence, Study

As per a recent study conducted regarding female infertility issues, it was shown that genes often predispose a few women to aneuploidy. But experts are still unclear about aneuploid egg production.

What Is Aneuploidy?

Aneuploidy is a complex phenomenon that arises after a chromosome segregation takes place. Due to this it brings errors between two meiotic divisions of the oocyte.

Although, some aneuploidy issues take place mainly due to misallocation of chromosomes during meiosis which can happen either in sperm or egg.

But most aneuploidy cases come forth due to misallocation of chromosomes while undergoing mitosis (cell division) and fertilization.

As per Jinchuan Xing, an author of the study and an associate professor in the genetics department at the Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences, the researchers after contributing to their study regarding female infertility issues stated that the goal of the study was mainly to know its genetic cause and also to develop some method to protect patients from unwanted aneuploidy risk.

Researchers, while studying the risk due to embryonic aneuploidy among female IVF patients stated that it can be predicted using the genomic data of patients. During their study, researchers also found some potential aneuploidy risk genes as well.

Female Infertility Treatment Can Have A Better Result By Looking At the Genomic Information

After a series of experimentation, researchers decided to thoroughly examine the genetic samples of patients by using a technique called “whole exome sequencing”. This technique allows them to check protein-coding sections of the entire human genome.

Afterwards, they devised a software based on machine learning or Artificial Intelligence (AI). The software was specifically developed to both learn and predict without undergoing any sort of specific instructions.

In order to make this happen automatically, researchers developed certain algorithms and statistical models to basically analyze and to make interferences from changing pattern in their genomes.

After applying all the above procedures, scientists were able to make out a specific risk score after analyzing a female’s genome.

During their course of study, scientists were also able to identify three genes DDX60L FGGY, and MCM5. These genes when undergo mutation, they are associated with a risk of producing aneuploid eggs.

To define the cases of aneuploidy, age is a predictive measure. But still it’s not the only accurate metric as it has been noticed that aneuploidy cases among individuals of same age may vary quite dramatically.
