How Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Linked to Genetic Mutations

What are the genetic changes or mutations that happen during the course of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)? Researchers have now analyzed some of these genetic constitution to better understand this complex malignancy.

They hope it will further help them to somewhat more improved prognosis of patients along with improved treatment and diagnostics.

The above study has been published in the Nature Genetics.

What Is Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)?

It’s a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow that basically exists in diverse forms and happen due to a number of causes.

So far, a little has been known about this chronic ailment. The disease is linked with certain genetic mutations. Even after a continued research on CLL, scientists could not attain a substantial result in their experiment.

But after they started studying the genetic formulations of the disease causing elements, they were able to understand the biological underpinnings of CLL along with its molecular subtypes.

Chronic Lymphoblastic Leukemia: New Developments

From the very beginning, the team of scientists were aware that they would have to analyze genetic mutations that includes changes in gene expression, genetic sequences or chemical modifications to DNA—or genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic data.

This is what one of the lead researchers has to say, “Our study has revealed that the genetic and biologic landscape of CLL is more complex than previously appreciated,” he said.

In the study conducted, it was found that clinical outcomes of the patients were associated with a combination of epigenomic, transcriptomic, and genomic features.
