Next Covid Variant Likely to Be More Infectious: WHO

Next Covid Variant: If you think Omicron was the last variant of coronavirus, you are wrong.

As per the latest WHO (World Health Organization) report, the next or upcoming variant is likely to be more infectious and transmissible. The organization has also released caution for the general public.

“Omicron will not be the last variant you will hear us speaking about. The next variant of concern will be more fit and what we mean by that is it will be more transmissible because it will have to overtake what is currently circulating. The big question is whether or not future variants will be more or less severe.” said Maria Van Kerkhove, Covid-19, who’s the technical head at WHO.

WHO also stated that due to the highly infectious nature of the upcoming Covid variant, there are chances that it will make more immune escape. Due to this, the new variant is likely to make Covid vaccines less effective.

We do not want to be in that situation. So, we want to make sure that we reduce the spread,” Maria stated.

“We expect that with the right interventions, the circulation of Covid-19 will be low. But even within those circulations, there will be flare-ups among people who are not protected by the vaccine or those who have waning immunity,” added Kerkhove.

Maria further added that the world is likely to see some seasonal patterns for infection surges mainly because the coronavirus happens to be a respiratory pathogen.
