E-cigarettes: Do you know how E-cigarettes can be harmful to your body? Well, if you are not aware of the ill effects of them,, we are going to help you with the latest report.

As per a study conducted on E-cigarettes, it can become the cause of blood pressure, raised heart rate, deterioration of small blood vessels, increase in blood clots and more due to the presence of nicotine.

As per the research done by the European Respiratory Society International Congress, it has been established that nicotine has all the power to cause an immediate increase in the formation of blood clots along with certain levels of deterioration for small blood vessels to expand and dilate. And this accounts for an increased blood pressure and heart rate.

Researches suggest that effects produced by smoking E-cigarettes are quite similar to the one produced when smoking traditional cigarettes. Long term use of E-cigarettes may become the cause of a stroke or heart attack.

The study was done by Gustaf Lyytinen who represent Helsingborg Hospital and researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. He along with his team carried out an experiment on a group of 22 men and women within the age group of 18 to 45 who were occasional smokers but all of them were healthy.

In his experiment, each volunteer was tested before and after taking 30 puffs of nicotine from an E-cigarette. The same test was conducted without nicotine as well. Both these tests were carried out at least one week ahead of the other.

On each occasion, doctors and researchers measured their blood pressure and heart rate and finally collected their blood sample. At the same time, they also carried out some other tests to measure any sort of impact on their blood circulation levels before they used E-cigarettes and 30 minutes afterward.

All these tests conducted aimed to visualize the dilation of blood vessels and regulate the blood supply to the body.

After conducting the tests, researches came to the conclusion that use of E-cigarettes became the reason of some immediate short term changes. Dr Lyytinen stated that he discovered an average 23% increase in blood clots but that came to normal within a span of 15 minutes.

Along with that, they also discovered an increase in the heart rates as well from an average of 66 beats per minute to 77 bpm. They also recorded a change in blood pressure levels from 108 millimeters of mercury/mmHg to an average of 117mmHg).

They also found that their blood vessels became narrower right after they consumed nicotine in the form of e-cigarettes.

But all the above effects were not seen before they consumed nicotine in the form of e-cigarettes or in the absence of nicotine. Please note that nicotine is known to enhance the level of adrenaline hormone that is responsible to increase the formation of blood clots.

This is what Dr Lyytinen stated, “Our results suggest that using e-cigarettes that contain nicotine have similar impacts on the body as smoking traditional cigarettes. This effect on blood clots is important because we know that in the long-term this can lead to clogged up and narrowed blood vessels, and that, of course, puts people at risk of heart attacks and strokes.”

Out of the team of researches, Jonathan Grigg was not a part of the team who conducted all the research work. He chairs the European Respiratory Society Tobacco Control Committee and Professor of Pediatric Respiratory and Environmental Medicine at Queen Mary University of London, UK.

This is what he stated, “The damage caused by smoking traditional cigarettes, including the effects of nicotine on the body, are well-known. E-cigarettes are relatively new, so we know much less about what they do to the body. “This study suggests that e-cigarettes containing nicotine can make clots form in users’ blood and make their small blood vessels less adaptable. This is a small study, so we’d like to see more research looking at these effects.

Jonathan further added, “Some people may use e-cigarettes when attempting to quit smoking because they are marketed as being safe, but this study adds to the growing evidence on the harmful effects of e-cigarettes. Other aids to quitting smoking which is evidenced-based and recommended by ERS, such as patches or gum, do not result in the lungs being exposed to high concentrations of potentially toxic compounds.”
