Dr. Quadt emphasizes, “Our findings highlight the need for cross-diagnostic screening in children and improved support for those who are neurodivergent. Kids with neurodivergent traits, whether officially diagnosed or not, frequently face elevated stress, which likely contributes to their increased inflammation. This, in turn, may be a significant factor in developing chronic disabling fatigue, severely impacting their quality of life.”
Adolescents With Neurodivergent Conditions Are Twice As Likely to Suffer from Persistent, Debilitating Fatigue
Although this study highlights the increased risk of chronic fatigue in neurodivergent individuals, it does not suggest that everyone with chronic fatigue is neurodivergent.
Chronic fatigue has complex and varied causes, requiring a thorough approach from healthcare providers to identify underlying factors and customize support and treatment effectively.
The findings highlight the need for more effective screening and increased support for neurodivergent children to help prevent chronic fatigue and boost their quality of life.
