Adults in the US who are exposed to malaria are given malaria antibody which is a type of monoclonal antibody.
It has been fond that a single injection of L9LS, a monoclonal antibody (mAb) is quite safe and equally protective to prevent the disease caused by the malarial parasite.
The above results have come out of a clinical trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The above trial was sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of NIH.
Antibody Treatment for Malaria
In order to treat malaria effectively, monoclonal antibodies are given subcutaneously. These are some specialized antibodies that are specially designed to treat the disease.
In view of the above, this is what the NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, M.D said, “A one-time intervention that protects against malaria for six months to a year could significantly reduce morbidity and mortality among children in malaria-endemic regions and offer an effective preventive tool for health care workers, military personnel and travelers to these areas.” he said.
What Is Malaria?
Malaria is actually caused by a parasite called plasmodium which enters the body after the bite of a mosquito. The symptoms include shivering, fever, vomiting, and sweating.
As per some clinical trials to evaluate L9LS, it was found that malaria can be prevented over 6 to 12 months against permanent or seasonal transmission in children and infants in countries like Kenya and Mali where it it is endemic.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that in the year 2020, around 250 million people had malaria and out of them 627,000 lost their lives.
L9LS was found similar to anti-malarial antibody CIS43LS which was later found highly effective, especially after it was administered intravenously.
However, it was found to be more potent. Increasing the level of potency is generally allowed for subcutaneous injection which is highly cost effective and feasible route of administration.
