Polio Cases Return After a Decade In the US

Nobody would have expected that polio cases would come back. According to the latest Health news, polio cases have returned in the US after a decade. It’s confirmed by a senior official associated at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The above basically follows an unfortunate incident where a man was found unvaccinated and was paralyzed due to the attack of the polio virus.

It was one of a kind case that came to light for the first time in the recent past. The last polio case was spotted in 2013.

Please note that polio is a highly contagious disease caused by the polio virus. Around 3 in 4 people who are infected don’t have symptoms. Still, they are found to transmit the virus to others.

The new case is stated to be the tip of the iceberg. This is what quoted by CNN, “There “must be several hundred cases in the community circulating”, Dr. Jose Romero, director of the CDC’s National Centre for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, was quoted as saying to CNN.

“There are a number of individuals in the community that have been infected with poliovirus. They are shedding the virus,” he said. “The spread is always a possibility because the spread is going to be silent.”

 

Polio Caused by Poliovirus

As we just mentioned above, polio is a highly contagious disease caused by a polio virus. It’s such a dangerous virus that 1 in 200 infected people are prone to become paralyzed.

As per the UK Health Security Agency, as many as 115 vaccine like polio virus cases have been spotted in the sewage water found in London between February and July 2022.
