Role of Adalimumab to Manage Hidradenitis Suppurativa In Adults

Hidradenitis Suppurativa in adults continues to be a long lasting problem as scientists are trying hard to achieve a breakthrough.

Now, as per the latest investigation from Japan, the use of monoclonal antibody adalimumab can be effective in the treatment of such a condition.

While testing Adalimumab for the treatment of Hidradenitis Suppurativa, scientists found that it was well tolerated and effective if implied in the right way.

The use of Adalimumab is not new though. It had been previously approved for the treatment of the disease in Europe, the US, and Japan.

Although, phase 3 trials of adalimumab is proved effective in the treatment, there were no new safety findings reported after the dosage was approved.

The above investigation was conducted by Koremasa Hayama, MD, PhD, Nihon University School of Medicine.

The team of scientists from Japan tried to evaluate the long term efficacy and safety of adalimumab to help in the treatment of moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa in patients.

What is the Hidradenitis Suppurativa?

Now, there is a need to analyze the cause and symptoms of Hidradenitis Suppurativa. But what this medical condition is all about?

Hidradenitis Suppurativa is basically an inflammatory disorder of pilosebaceous glands which takes the shape of a chronic relapsing inflammatory disorder if not treated.

The above condition is mostly localized in anatomic regions with the presence of a number of apocrine glands.

The above condition often gets triggered due to the follicular rupture associated with an intense inflammatory response. In most cases, the condition is managed by the body. However, in special circumstances, the above condition develops.

The role of any pathogen in spreading the above condition is not denied at all. In some cases, it has been seen that bacteria often becomes responsible autoinflammatory response of the immune system.

Patients who develop Hidradenitis suppurativa first goes through one or more openings. It’s often mixed with tender and erythematous nodules and papules.

In the later stages, lesions fluctuate and start draining out on their own. In some cases, the condition is followed by fistula formation.

Now, as the condition progresses further, these skin lesions increase in numbers that are often associated with fistulae and pronounced scarring.

According to a study, it has been reported that the prevalence of hidradenitis suppurativa cases in the US is 1-2%.

Most of the times, it has been noticed that patients don’t go to a doctor mainly due to embarrassment. Please note that hidradenitis suppurativa is quite common women than in men.

But in men, it’s more intense and is often associated with acne along with other symptoms.
