Do you think there can be a link between prediabetes and heart attack? Well, if you consider diabetes, it’s a serious condition where the chances of a heart attack risk is always there.
Not only this, diabetes leads to several other health conditions including kidney related problems and stroke.
But a link between prediabetes and heart attack risk has still not been established, as per the study made by Kavin Raj, M.D., of Saint Peter’s University Hospital/Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J.
Link Between Prediabetes And Heart Attack
The author pointed out in his study where he gives a wake up call to everybody to mainly shift their focus to managing prediabetes effectively, and not just diabetes.
Raj further illustrated that he wants to encourage everyone to follow a healthy life pattern and maintain a healthy diet. Along with that, it is also necessary for you to exercise at least 150 minutes a week. If prediabetics follow this much, the risk of having heart attacks can be decreased.
This is what he suggested, “Our study serves as a wake-up to everyone to shift the focus to managing prediabetes, not just diabetes,” Raj said. “Based on our findings, we encourage everyone to make lifestyle changes, follow a healthy diet, and regular exercise for at least 150 minutes each week in patients with prediabetes to decrease the risk of heart attacks.” he said.
The study is based on the data of 1.79 million patients who got admitted because of having a heart attack. Out of these patients, 1% had prediabetes.
After doctors were able to adjust the risk factors for heart disease like obesity, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, prediabetes was associated with 25% increased odds of a heart attack as compared to patients who didn’t have prediabetes.
This is what Raj explained, “Our findings reinforce the importance of early recognition by screening and early intervention of prediabetes by lifestyle changes and medications to decrease the risk of cardiovascular events,” he said.
