Has Covid Turned Endemic? Experts Say to Wait & Watch

Has Covid Turned Endemic: Right now, the Omicron-covid wave seems to have been sliding giving new hopes for the economy to boost. But on a larger note, the talks continue to be there among people and experts who say if covid turned endemic and turning into yet another kind of ailment.

While experts believe that it would take some more time to analyze the facts to know if covid turned endemic. They believe it would take at least one to three months to analyze the situation.

Dr Samiran Pande, who’s the head of the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research), in the epidemiology division, stated that Covid-19 infection has now 2 year old and experts are still studying the patterns of this virus affecting people.

Has Covid Turned Endemic? Experts Say to Wait & Watch

In the recent update from Dr Gagandeep Kang, professor of Christian Medical College stated that covid tuned endemic, especially in India as majority of people have to live with SARS-CoV-2 virus.

A few days back, WHO’s chief scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan had stated that there is a kind of pattern where they can see covid behaving more like endemic.

The third wave of coronavirus that grew quickly but also fell quickly too is known to be milder as compared to the 2nd wave which was caused by the Delta variant.

In line with what Dr. Soumya Swaminathan had stated, another doctor from Mumbai stated that in cities like Mumbai where over 95% population has been vaccinated, the coronavirus won’t be able to make a worldwide havoc. But still, it can impact people creating some seasonal and localized outbreaks.

On the other hand, Dr. Shahank Joshi, active member of COVID-19 task force who stated that it looks quite premature to say that covid turned endemic. He further stated that there are a few terms like herd immunity and endemic that of course look some great narratives, but at the same time we all should go by facts and figures.

He further added that at the moment, the 3rd wave of coronavirus is declining across the country and will be lowest in another 2-4 weeks time. He said that will be the time to study some more facts about the coronavirus.

At that time, there will be some studies needed to assess the effectiveness of COVID vaccines.

On the other hand WHO (World Health Organization) has already declared a pandemic based on the number of fatalities and the highest number of cases in countries. Some experts believe that it is the government that needs to decide if it has become endemic from pandemic.

But in order of doing so, they need to first establish regarding its severity, seasonability and frequency.

As the present Omicron wave has dropped, experts still require some more time to check for any upsurge of the coronavirus. And so, most experts believe that it would certainly take a few more months to check for its steady pattern to emerge.

This is what a doctor from the state government of Mumbai has to say, “It would be worrisome if a new variant comes about with the hyper-transmissibility of Omicron and Delta’s ability to cause serious disease,” he said.

He added that in case, such a variant doesn’t come about, India will most probably see outbreaks limited to a particular geographical area.
